Barely a Week To Go!

We're in that stage of excitement about a week out from our departure for our cruise from Athens-to-Venice.  Our voyage is on a Viking ocean liner which will be new to us as we're accustomed to the smaller river cruises with about 150 people vs. the 1,200 on this ship.

There's good and bad with that, like all things in life I guess.  There are more options for really gourmet food, and a small pool and casino.  The latter has only gotten us into trouble in the past as it is far easier to lose than win money.  There's a nice spa for a massage, and just generally more services.  But, a river cruise is nice not to have to compete for meals or on-shore experiences with more people.  Ying and yang.

We haven't yet started to pack one week out although I can tell Cheryl is getting itchy to begin.  Her process usually takes several days while mine is about a half hour.  You have to plan for all weather contingencies which always seem to crop up (rain, cold).  Sometimes we're successful and other times we're buying clothes in foreign cities.

The itinerary begins with a great introduction to Greece with a visit to Athens, Santorini, Olympia, and Corfu over five successive days.  Then, we switch to eastern European countries as we travel north on the Adriatic Sea. First, Kotor, Montenegro followed by Dubrovnik and Zadar, Croatia, then Koper, Slovenia before ending with a few days in Venice.  Expectations for the eastern European stops aren't as high as they are for Greece or Venice, as it looks like the cruise line and countries involved are trying to build up their economies with the cruise industry and they're in the early stages.

I'll be sending off a quick post pretty much every day, so if you want to follow along, please feel free to do so at athenstovenice.blogspot.com. First real post will be after we land in Athens and make our way to the ship on Monday, September 2.  We look forward to the trip and certainly look forward to sharing our good fortune of being together, well, and alive with all of you.  Back to you with more soon!
